Emergency, urgent or can it wait?

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

A plumbing emergency is anything causing active water damage, a safety risk, or a total loss of heating or water. Burst pipes, water near electrics, sewage backing up, a gas smell and no heat in freezing weather all need someone out now. A dripping tap or a single slow drain almost always can wait until morning — and you'll pay less for it.

Quick answers

"Is this an emergency?" — the ones we're asked most

Straight answers from our engineers. If yours isn't here, call 07534 793949 and ask.

Is a blocked drain an emergency?

Usually not — but it becomes one fast. A single slow sink can wait until morning. It is an emergency if sewage is backing up indoors, several drains are blocked at once, or an outside drain is overflowing in heavy rain, because that means the blockage is downstream and it will keep rising. More on blocked drains.

Is a blocked toilet an emergency?

If it's the only toilet in the property, yes — most landlords and letting agents treat loss of the only WC as an emergency repair. If you have a second working toilet and the water isn't rising, it can normally wait until the next working day. Stop flushing it in the meantime.

Is having no hot water an emergency?

On its own, it's urgent rather than an emergency — we'd aim to get to you same day. It becomes an emergency when there's no heating either and the weather is freezing, or where there's a vulnerable person, young child or elderly resident in the property. What to do when your boiler fails.

Is a leaking toilet an emergency?

It depends where the water is going. Leaking into the bowl wastes water but isn't urgent. Leaking from the base onto the floor is — that water travels under flooring and into ceilings below, and the damage costs far more than the repair. Turn off the isolation valve behind the toilet and call us.

Is a dripping tap an emergency?

No. A dripping tap is a routine job — book it in normal hours and you'll pay a normal rate rather than an emergency call-out. Worth fixing though: a steady drip can waste several hundred litres a month.

I'm a landlord — what has to be treated as an emergency?

As a rule, anything that makes the property unsafe or uninhabitable: no water, no heating in cold weather, a serious leak, loss of the only toilet, or anything electrical made unsafe by water. We work with landlords and letting agents across Sheffield and can invoice the agency directly. Call 07534 793949.

Before we arrive

What to do right now, while you wait

Three minutes of the right action can be the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

1

Turn the water off

Find your internal stopcock — usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes in a downstairs loo or airing cupboard — and turn it clockwise until it stops. Then open the cold tap in the kitchen to drain the pipes down.

2

Make it safe

If water is anywhere near sockets, lights or the consumer unit, switch the electrics off at the mains and don't touch them. If you can smell gas, leave the property and ring the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999 before anything else.

3

Contain and call

Buckets and towels under the leak, move what you can out of the way, and take a photo — useful for us and for any insurance claim. Then ring us and we'll talk you through the rest on the phone.

FAQs

Emergency plumber in Sheffield — your questions answered

Got an emergency right now? Call 07534 793949 — we'll pick up.

How quickly can you get to me?

We're local to Sheffield, so for genuine emergencies we aim to be with you as fast as possible — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 07534 793949 and we'll give you an honest ETA straight away.

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Sheffield?

We always agree a clear price before starting — no inflated out-of-hours panic pricing. Costs depend on the job and time, but you'll never be surprised. See our emergency call-out cost guide for typical rates.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Anything causing damage, danger or loss of heat or water — burst pipes, major leaks, no hot water or heating, blocked or overflowing toilets and gas concerns. If you're unsure, see what counts as a plumbing emergency below — or just call us and we'll tell you straight.

Should I call an emergency plumber or wait for a normal appointment?

If water is actively escaping, near electrics, or you've lost heating in cold weather, call now — waiting turns a repair bill into a damage bill. If it's contained, not getting worse and you have a working toilet and hot water, booking a normal appointment will cost you less. If you're not sure which side of the line you're on, ring us and describe it — we'll tell you honestly, and we won't send someone out at emergency rates for a job that doesn't need it.

What's the latest you'll come out?

There isn't one. The phone is answered at 3am the same as 3pm, and we attend genuine emergencies through the night. Late calls are exactly what a 24/7 service is for — you won't get an answerphone telling you to try again in the morning.

Do you charge more at night or on a bank holiday?

Out-of-hours work can carry a higher rate, and we'll tell you what it is before we set off — but we don't apply panic pricing because you've called at a bad moment. The price we quote at 2am is one we'd be comfortable quoting at 2pm.

Are you available at night, weekends and bank holidays?

Yes — that's the whole point of 24/7. Our phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, including Christmas and bank holidays.

Do you cover my area?

We cover the whole of Sheffield and South Yorkshire, including Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield and Worksop. See where we work or call to check we cover your postcode.

What should I do while I wait for you?

For a burst pipe or major leak, turn off your water at the stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and switch off the electrics if water is near them. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. Then call us and we'll talk you through the rest.
