The shower at the top of our house barely trickles — is the hill to blame?
It can be part of it. Properties higher up a hill often see lower incoming mains pressure and flow than those further down, and every floor you go up costs you a little more. But it is rarely the whole story — a partly closed valve, a furred-up supply pipe, a scaled shower or an undersized boiler for the demand can all produce the same symptom. We test the incoming flow and pressure at the stop tap first, so you find out which it actually is before anyone spends money on it.
Would a pump or an accumulator help our hot water?
Sometimes, and it depends what is limiting you. If the mains supply itself is the bottleneck, storing water in an accumulator or fitting an appropriate boosting arrangement can genuinely transform how a shower performs. If the problem is a gravity-fed system with too little head, a shower pump may be the right answer instead. And if the supply is fine and something else is restricting it, neither will help. We will measure first and tell you which category you fall into.
We still have a cold water tank in the loft — do we need it?
Only if the system that depends on it stays. An open-vented system with a hot water cylinder needs the loft tank to feed it. If you move to a combi or an unvented cylinder, the tank normally comes out and you get the loft space and the airing cupboard back. Whether that change suits your house depends on how much hot water the household uses at once and what your mains can deliver — on the hillside here that second point matters more than people expect.
Our boiler is in the cellar — is that still acceptable?
A boiler can be sited in a cellar or basement provided the installation meets current requirements, and the main things that decide it are the flue route, ventilation, condensate drainage and safe access for servicing. Older cellar installations sometimes fail on one of those because standards have moved on since they went in. We will inspect it, tell you plainly whether it can be replaced in the same position, and if not, what the realistic alternatives are.
