Chapeltown sits roughly seven miles north of Sheffield city centre, about the same distance again south of Barnsley, and it has always had a life of its own. It has its own town centre with a cricket ground and a wooded park either side of it, its own railway station on the Penistone and Hallam lines, and easy access to two junctions of the M1. Historically part of the parish of Ecclesfield, it grew around ironworking — the Newton, Chambers works, established in 1793, became what is now the Thorncliffe industrial estate.
The housing reflects that long history. There are older properties from the town's industrial years, substantial inter-war and post-war housing, and newer estate development that has filled in around the edges — a lot of it semi-detached and detached family homes with gardens, rather than the tight terraced streets you find closer to the city centre.

Our house is on one of the newer estates — is the boiler likely to be different?
Usually, yes. Newer properties tend to have a modern condensing boiler, sealed system pipework and a fairly logical layout, so faults are more often about controls, sensors, condensate drainage or system pressure than about worn-out pipework. That generally makes diagnosis quicker. It also means an annual service is worth keeping up, because several manufacturers make continued warranty cover conditional on it.
We have a 1970s or 80s semi — what tends to need attention first?
On properties of that age the boiler has often already been replaced at least once, but the rest of the system frequently has not. The usual candidates are the original radiators, valves that no longer shut off properly, a system that has never been flushed, and heating controls that predate anything you would fit now. Sorting the system around the boiler often makes more difference to how a house feels than replacing the boiler again.
Can you fit air conditioning as well as heating?
Yes. As well as central heating and underfloor heating we install air conditioning, which people in larger family homes and converted loft rooms increasingly ask about for summer. We will look at the room, how it is used and where an outdoor unit can reasonably go before recommending anything.
