One suburb, very different heating systems street to street
Norton lies around four miles south of Sheffield city centre in the S8 postcode. It began as a village in Derbyshire and was brought into Sheffield in two stages, in 1901 and 1933 — and the old parish once took in Norton Lees, Greenhill, Backmoor, Hemsworth and Woodseats. Our neighbours' heating is nothing like ours — is that normal around here?
It is, and Norton is a good example of why. The area grew outwards from an old village core over a very long period, so properties within a short walk of each other can be of completely different ages and have had entirely different systems fitted. We never assume from the street what we'll find inside — we look at the actual system in your property first.
What is involved in replacing a boiler in an older property that has been extended over the years?

Frequently yes. Stored hot water suits properties with more than one bathroom or with several outlets in use at once, and it isn't automatically worth abandoning. Whether it is worth changing depends on how the household actually uses hot water, the incoming mains flow and the condition of the existing cylinder and controls. We'll give you a straight answer rather than defaulting to a combi.
Where is the stop tap likely to be in an older house here?
Most often under the kitchen sink, though in older properties it can be in a cellar, a downstairs cupboard, a utility or under the floor near the front of the house, and there will normally be an external one under a small cover near the boundary as well. It is worth finding yours and checking it actually turns before you ever need it — we're happy to point it out while we're there.
