Your local S8 plumber

One suburb, very different heating systems street to street

Norton lies around four miles south of Sheffield city centre in the S8 postcode. It began as a village in Derbyshire and was brought into Sheffield in two stages, in 1901 and 1933 — and the old parish once took in Norton Lees, Greenhill, Backmoor, Hemsworth and Woodseats. The oldest part of the village is still recognisable around St James' Church, which has medieval origins, with Graves Park — one of the largest parks in the city, and historically tied to the Norton estate — on its doorstep.

Around that historic core, a great deal of later residential development has filled in over the last century. The practical consequence for us is that Norton is one of the most mixed areas we work in: two houses a few doors apart can have completely different heating.

On any given week in S8 we might be working on an older property with a hot water cylinder, gravity-fed tanks in the loft and pipework added in several eras, and then on a much more recent house with a sealed, pressurised system and a condensing combi. Both are perfectly serviceable when they're looked after; they simply fail in different ways and need different things doing to them.

So we survey before we recommend. Boiler servicing and replacement, hot water and cylinder work, radiators and system upgrades, bathroom plumbing, leaks and emergencies — whichever type of system you have, every gas job is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer and we explain what we've found before starting.

“Thank you to Rick and the team for fitting our new boiler and radiators. I waited a while before leaving a review, but 6 months down the line it's still working just as good. I would highly recommend.”

FAQs

Plumbers in Norton — your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call 07534 793949 — we're happy to help.

Our neighbours' heating is nothing like ours — is that normal around here?

It is, and Norton is a good example of why. The area grew outwards from an old village core over a very long period, so properties within a short walk of each other can be of completely different ages and have had entirely different systems fitted. We never assume from the street what we'll find inside — we look at the actual system in your property first.

What is involved in replacing a boiler in an older property that has been extended over the years?

The extra work is usually in the survey rather than the installation. We need to know what the whole property now needs heating-wise, where the existing pipework runs and what condition it is in, and whether the flue and gas supply can serve a modern boiler from the position you want it in. Once that is clear the swap itself is generally straightforward.

We have a separate boiler and a hot water cylinder. Is that still a sensible setup?

Frequently yes. Stored hot water suits properties with more than one bathroom or with several outlets in use at once, and it isn't automatically worth abandoning. Whether it is worth changing depends on how the household actually uses hot water, the incoming mains flow and the condition of the existing cylinder and controls. We'll give you a straight answer rather than defaulting to a combi.

Where is the stop tap likely to be in an older house here?

Most often under the kitchen sink, though in older properties it can be in a cellar, a downstairs cupboard, a utility or under the floor near the front of the house, and there will normally be an external one under a small cover near the boundary as well. It is worth finding yours and checking it actually turns before you ever need it — we're happy to point it out while we're there.

Do you cover Norton Lees, Greenhill, Backmoor and Woodseats too?

Yes — we work right across S8 and the surrounding south of the city, including Norton Lees, Woodseats, Greenhill, Backmoor, Hemsworth, Meersbrook, Beauchief and Abbeydale. If you're nearby and not sure, just give us a call.
