Our house is one of a row all built to the same design — does that make the job easier?
It usually helps. Where properties share a layout, the pipe runs, the flue position and the original heating arrangement tend to be in similar places, so there is less exploratory work and less mess. We still survey your own property properly, because previous alterations vary from house to house, but we rarely start from scratch.
Can the boiler be moved to a different room while it is being replaced?
Often it can, and on this sort of housing it is a common request — usually to free up a kitchen wall or an airing cupboard. It depends on where the flue can safely terminate, where the gas supply and condensate can be run, and what that does to the pipework. We'll tell you what is realistic in your property before anything is ordered.
We're in a flat or maisonette — can you still replace the boiler and radiators?
Yes. The main things we check first are where the flue can terminate, how the condensate can be run away, and whether any of the system is shared with neighbouring properties. If you rent, the work will need to go through whoever is responsible for the building, and we're used to dealing with that.
Is it better to replace the boiler and the radiators together, or one after the other?
If the radiators are original and the system is sludged, doing it together often makes more sense — a new boiler pushed round old, partially blocked radiators will never perform as it should, and some manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned as part of the installation. Where the radiators are sound, we'll say so and just flush and rebalance instead.
