What to Do If Your Radiators Aren’t Getting Hot
Nothing’s more frustrating than switching on the heating and feeling cold radiators. Before you call a plumber, let’s run through some quick checks and fixes you can try today. If they don’t work, you’ll know it’s time to bring in the pros.
1. Check Your Boiler Pressure
Low boiler pressure is one of the top reasons radiators don’t heat up. Find your boiler gauge—usually on the front— and make sure it’s between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it’s below 1 bar:
- Switch the boiler off at the mains.
- Open the filling loop valve until the pressure climbs to 1.2 bar.
- Close the valve and switch the boiler back on.
If the pressure drops again, you may have a leak. Check exposed pipework or book a leak detection service.
2. Bleed Your Radiators
Air trapped in radiators stops hot water from circulating. You’ll often hear gurgling or feel cold spots at the top. To bleed:
- Turn off your heating and let radiators cool.
- Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve on each radiator.
- When you hear a hiss, catch drips with a cloth and close the valve.
- Restart the heating and re-check boiler pressure.

3. Look for Blockages or Sludge
Over time, rust and debris build up inside radiators. This “sludge” sits at the bottom and prevents proper heating. Signs include:
- Radiators hot at the bottom but cold at the top.
- Noisy pipes when the heating kicks in.

4. Check Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)
TRVs let you control each radiator’s heat level. If one sticks closed, that radiator won’t warm up. To free it:

- Tap it gently with a wrench to loosen any seized mechanism.

5. Inspect Your Pump
Your heating pump pushes hot water around the system. If it fails, flow stops and radiators stay cold. You’ll often hear a constant hum or no sound at all.

6. Balance Your Radiators
Balancing means adjusting valves so each radiator gets the right flow. An unbalanced system lets the closest radiators hog heat while others stay cold.
