Plumbing for Carlton's bungalows, semis and stone cottages
Carlton in Lindrick lies about three miles north of Worksop on the A60, with two historic cores — North and South Carlton — joined into a single conservation area in 2010. The oldest buildings are local magnesian limestone under clay pantile roofs; brick took over from the 1830s and 1840s. Most of the village's housing is later: 1930s to 1950s semis and bungalows along Long Lane, a 1950s estate between Rotherham Baulk and Long Lane, and 1960s estates either side. A council housing needs assessment found that more than half the homes are semi-detached and almost one in five is a bungalow.
That mix shapes the work. In bungalows and older semis, cold water tanks, feed-and-expansion tanks and pipe runs often sit in the loft — the coldest part of the house in winter, and the place most likely to freeze or leak unnoticed. Converting to a combi or sealed system can remove those tanks entirely, and where they stay, the pipework needs proper protection.
In the conservation area's stone cottages we plan pipe and flue routes around thick walls and original features, and radiators are sized for rooms that may not hold heat the way a modern house does. Every gas job is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we talk through the options first.
