How to Bleed a Radiator: Step by Step

Step 1: Turn off your heatingSwitch off your central heating system and wait for all the radiators to cool down completely. Bleeding a hot radiator risks scalding from escaping steam or hot water.
Step 2: Find the bleed valveThe bleed valve is a small square-shaped valve, usually located at the top of the radiator on one end. It looks like a small nut with a slot or square recess in the centre.
Step 3: Position your cloth or containerPlace a cloth or small container directly underneath the bleed valve. Even when doing this correctly, a small amount of water will escape when you open the valve — this is normal.
