Boiler repair & replacement
Breakdowns, servicing and replacements planned around flue routes and stone walls rather than forced through them.
Heat365 are Gas Safe registered plumbers and heating engineers covering Elsecar and the S74 area. Elsecar is a planned model village of solid sandstone terraces and a 1911 garden village — almost all of it historic, much of it listed, and none of it forgiving of a badly planned pipe route. Call us 24/7.
Elsecar sits around six miles south of Barnsley in the valley of Knoll Beck, roughly two miles below Hoyland, with its own station on the Sheffield to Barnsley line and the heritage centre occupying the former New Yard workshops. It was built from the 1790s as a planned estate village under the Earls Fitzwilliam, and most of that planned village survives: Old Row, Station Row, Distillery Row of 1836, Reform Row of 1837, the terraces of Fitzwilliam Street and Cobcar Terrace.
For heating work the construction is the whole story. The traditional fabric here is local sandstone walls with stone slate roofs, and as a general rule buildings before 1850 are coursed rubble while later ones are coursed dressed stone. These are solid walls with no cavity, built with an outer and inner stone skin and rubble infill, and the local sandstone is soft and weathers readily. That means high heat loss, radiators that often need to be sized properly rather than matched to what was there, and pipe and flue routes that have to be worked out in advance instead of chased through whatever is nearest. Chimney stacks are sandstone or brick and are not something to make holes in casually.
The 1911 garden village at the Strafford Avenue, Lifford Place and Cobcar Lane end is different again: brick-built houses with rendered upper storeys, deep red tiled roofs, tall brick chimneystacks and, unusually for the date, internal bathrooms. There are around thirty listed buildings in the conservation area, with terraces such as Old Row and Reform Row each listed as a single item covering several dwellings, so what one owner does affects a protected group. Much original cast iron rainwater goods has already been replaced in plastic, and the historic rear outbuildings are expected to be retained. We plan work here accordingly, and we will tell you where we think consent is needed before anything is fixed to the building. Every gas job is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Work sized and routed for a conservation village, not for a modern estate house.
Breakdowns, servicing and replacements planned around flue routes and stone walls rather than forced through them.
Radiator sizing and balancing for solid-walled rooms with high heat loss, plus full heating upgrades.
Non-invasive leak detection in stone walls and under floors, burst pipes, blocked drains and 24/7 callout.
Elsecar sits in the S74 postcode, south of Barnsley in the Knoll Beck valley below Hoyland. If you are anywhere on this map, we cover you.
Solid stone walls and listed fabric mean the route comes first. We work it out with you rather than improvising on the day.
Where we think external work needs consent on a listed building or in the conservation area, we will say so up front.
Every gas and boiler job is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we are fully insured.

Yes — listing does not stop you heating your home. What it affects is the external work: where a flue terminates, where condensate discharges, what pipework is visible on the elevation and what is fixed to historic fabric. Some of that needs consent before it happens. We will set out the options and tell you where we think an application is needed, rather than install something that has to come out again.
Because the walls are solid. There is no cavity, just an outer and an inner stone skin with rubble between, so heat leaves far faster than in a modern wall. The usual answer is correctly sized radiators, a properly balanced system and better controls. Simply fitting a bigger boiler rarely solves it and costs more to run.
That is always the aim. We use non-invasive leak detection first and open up as little as possible, because making good on soft local sandstone and stone slate is not straightforward. We will tell you exactly what we intend to lift or open before we do it.
It can. Several of the historic rows here, including Old Row and Reform Row, are listed as one entry covering a number of dwellings, so alterations are assessed in the context of the whole group rather than just your house. It is worth checking before committing to anything visible externally, and we will raise it if we think it applies.
