Boilers & hot water
System boilers, stored hot water and combis where they genuinely suit, plus servicing and breakdown repairs.
Heat365 are Gas Safe registered plumbers and heating engineers covering Retford, from the Georgian streets around the Market Square to Ordsall, Moorgate and West Retford. Bigger, older houses with several bathrooms need heating and hot water planned properly — and that is what we do. Call us 24/7.
Retford is a market town on the River Idle and the Chesterfield Canal, about eight miles east of Worksop. Its centre grew quickly after the Great North Road was re-routed through the town in the 1760s and the canal opened in the 1770s, and Bassetlaw District Council's conservation area documents describe rows of Georgian townhouses and coaching inns built on the old medieval plots. Later suburbs spread out in the late Victorian and Edwardian years, and the town has more than a hundred listed buildings.
Taller, deeper houses of that kind tend to ask more of a heating system than a modern semi. Where a home has two or three bathrooms, a single combi boiler can struggle when more than one tap or shower is running, so a system boiler with a stored hot water cylinder is often the better fit — and older open-vented tanks in the loft or airing cupboard may be due an upgrade. High ceilings and larger rooms also need radiators sized for the room rather than copied from what was there before.
Retford is not all period property — much of the town's housing is on estates in Ordsall, Hallcroft and Spital Hill, and we look after those boilers and bathrooms too. Every gas job is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and we explain the options before any work starts.
The work that comes up most in Retford's bigger, older houses — hot water that keeps up, heating that reaches every floor, and bathrooms that work properly. We look at the whole system, not just the part that has failed.

Radiators sized to each room, period-style and vertical designs, and balancing so the top floor warms up too.

It depends on how many bathrooms you have, the incoming mains flow and pressure, and how many people use hot water at once. A combi heats water on demand, so two showers running together can leave both short. A system boiler with a stored hot water cylinder usually copes better in bigger households. We measure and talk it through before recommending either, and we'll be honest if your current set-up only needs a repair.
Usually, yes. Older open-vented systems can often be converted to a sealed system, and the stored hot water side upgraded to a modern cylinder. Whether that suits your home depends on the pipework, the water supply and where the cylinder can go — we check those first and explain the options. Where a full conversion isn't the right call, replacing a corroded tank or a failing pump can be the sensible middle ground.
In taller period houses that is often down to undersized radiators, an unbalanced system or sludge in the pipework. We work out each room's heat loss, check the circulation and balance the system, and suggest a power flush or larger radiators only where they will actually help. Thermostatic radiator valves and a properly set-up thermostat also make a big difference in houses where some rooms are used far more than others.
Replacing a boiler in the same position, using the same flue route, is usually straightforward. A new flue on a front elevation, or work on a listed building, may need permission. Bassetlaw District Council's conservation team can advise, and we'll tell you which parts of the job are likely to raise the question.
