By law, work on gas appliances in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer — the requirement runs through the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, and the HSE sets out what that means for households and landlords in its domestic gas safety guidance. Is your boiler worth repairing, or is it time to replace it?
This is the question most people are really asking, and pushing everyone towards a new boiler would be the easy answer. It is not ours. A well-installed boiler that has been serviced regularly is usually worth repairing, and a single failed part on a boiler still under manufacturer warranty is very often not something you should pay to replace at all.
Repair usually makes sense when the boiler is relatively young, has a service history, the failed part is a discrete component rather than the heat exchanger, and this is the first significant fault. Replacement starts to make more sense when the boiler is well past its warranty, parts are getting hard to source, you have already paid for two or three repairs in a short space of time, or the fault is in a major component whose cost is a large share of what a new boiler would cost fitted.

My boiler has stopped working — what should I check before calling?
Three quick checks are worth doing. Is the boiler still getting power and is the thermostat calling for heat? Is the pressure gauge sitting in the normal band (typically around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold)? And in cold weather, is the condensate pipe outside frozen? Will a repair invalidate my boiler warranty?
Not when the work is done properly by a Gas Safe registered engineer and the boiler has been serviced as the manufacturer requires. It is unregistered or undocumented work that puts a warranty at risk. If your boiler is still in warranty, tell us when you call — in some cases the right move is a manufacturer claim rather than a paid repair, and we will say so.
My boiler keeps losing pressure. Is that a repair or a service?
A boiler that needs topping up repeatedly has a fault, so it is a repair. The usual causes are a leak somewhere on the system, a failed pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Topping it up treats the symptom; finding the cause is the actual fix.
Should I just book a service instead?
