Heating and plumbing for Wadsley's stone-built and later housing

Wadsley is a small suburb roughly three miles north-west of Sheffield city centre, sitting on the hillside next to Hillsborough and above the River Don. It was a village long before the city reached it — a farming settlement and later a cutlery-making community — and the older core is a conservation area, with vernacular stone houses, former farm buildings, stone walls and an informal layout of lanes running across the slope. Around that older core sits a good deal of twentieth-century housing.

The result is a suburb where no two neighbouring properties are necessarily alike. A stone house with thick solid walls and small original openings behaves very differently from a later brick semi a street away, and the heating that suits one will not necessarily suit the other. Older stone properties around here have also usually been altered and extended, so it is common to find pipework and radiators from several different decades all feeding off one boiler.

Our work in Wadsley reflects that. It is often about making a mixed-era system behave as one thing: getting heat distributed evenly between the older and newer parts of a house, sizing a replacement boiler for what the property has actually become rather than what it was, and finding sensible routes for pipework where there are no cavities and no obvious voids. Every gas job is done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

“Thank you to Rick and the team for fitting our new boiler and radiators. I waited a while before leaving a review, but 6 months down the line it's still working just as good. I would highly recommend.”

FAQs

Plumbers in Wadsley — your questions answered

Can't see your question? Call 07534 793949 — we're happy to help.

Our house has thick solid stone walls. Does that change how the heating should be set up?

It can. Solid stone walls behave differently from modern cavity construction — they take longer to warm through and hold that warmth for longer once they have. In practice that often means the radiators need to be sized generously and the heating run in a steadier way rather than in short bursts. We look at the property as it stands and set the system up to suit it rather than applying a standard assumption.

There is nowhere obvious to run new pipework in a solid stone cottage. What are the options?

With no cavities to use, the realistic routes are usually under floors where they are suspended, through existing service runs and cupboards, along skirting level in neatly boxed pipework, or occasionally externally in insulated pipe where nothing else works. We will walk the route with you before starting so you know exactly where pipework will be visible and where it will not.

Our heating has been added to by several owners over the years. Can it be tidied into one system?

Usually, yes. A system that has grown piecemeal often has mismatched pipe sizes, redundant sections that no longer serve anything, and radiators added without the rest of the system being rebalanced. We map what is actually there, remove or cap what is doing nothing, and rebalance the remainder so the whole house is being served properly rather than just the parts nearest the boiler.

There is an old flue or chimney in the house that nothing uses any more. Does it matter?

It is worth dealing with. A redundant flue left open can draw cold air into the room and let damp in, while one that has simply been sealed at both ends with no ventilation can cause problems of its own. If an appliance has been removed at some point, we can check that what remains has been made safe and left properly ventilated, and tell you if anything still needs attention.

Do you cover Wadsley Bridge, Wisewood, Middlewood and Worrall as well?
