Boiler replacement and heating upgrades on Firth Park's estate housing
Firth Park takes its name from the park given to the city by the Sheffield steel industrialist Mark Firth in 1875, on land that had been part of the Page Hall estate. The neighbourhood that grew around it — north-east of Fir Vale and south-east of Shiregreen, in the S5 postcode — is largely inter-war and post-war housing, and the wider ward takes in Longley, Parson Cross and part of Wincobank.
That gives the area a very different profile from the Victorian terraces closer in. A lot of the housing here is council-built semis, short terraces and maisonettes put up from the 1920s onwards to broadly standardised layouts, much of it now privately owned. Later estate development sits alongside it.
For us that is an advantage. Where houses share a layout, we already know roughly where the pipework runs, where the old boiler is likely to be sited and what the flue route will look like — so a survey is quicker and there are fewer surprises on the day. Most of our S5 work is boiler replacement and heating upgrades: swapping out an ageing appliance, adding or replacing radiators, fitting proper controls, and sorting the repairs that come with a system that has been in place a long time. Every gas job is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

“Needed a new boiler installed asap, got in contact with Ricky. Straight away he quoted & fitted me in quickly. The lads stayed for 10 plus hours and returned the next day to ensure I had water and heating. Can't fault the lads at all.”
“Great service, responded quickly and sorted my boiler out so I had heating and hot water back on in this freezing weather. Came out late on a Saturday night to fix. NHS discount too!!”
“Thank you to Rick and the team for fitting our new boiler and radiators. I waited a while before leaving a review, but 6 months down the line it's still working just as good. I would highly recommend.”

Our house was built by the council in the 1930s — does that change how a boiler is fitted?
Not in terms of the rules, which are the same everywhere. What it does change is the practicalities. Houses of that era tend to have solid walls in places, a particular position for the original flue, and pipework runs that were laid out for a very different system. Because so many of them share a layout, we usually have a good idea of what we will find before we arrive — but we still survey each property rather than assume.
We live in a maisonette — can the boiler and flue be replaced?
In most cases yes. The things that decide it are where the flue can terminate safely, whether the condensate can be drained properly, and access for future servicing. Maisonettes sometimes need a slightly different flue arrangement to a house, which is exactly the sort of thing a survey establishes up front. If you rent, or the building is managed, we will also tell you what permissions are likely to be needed before work starts.
We have electric storage heaters — can we change to gas central heating?
If there is a gas supply to the property, usually yes. It is a bigger job than a boiler swap because the whole heating circuit and radiators have to be installed from scratch, and the hot water arrangement changes too. We will check the incoming gas supply and meter first, since some properties need that upgrading to feed a boiler, and set out the full scope before you commit to anything.
Do you need access to the loft or the airing cupboard for a boiler change?
Often, yes. If you are moving from an open-vented system, the loft tank and the cylinder in the airing cupboard normally come out, and we need to get to both. If you are replacing like for like, we may still need loft access for pipework or the flue. It helps enormously if those spaces are cleared before we arrive — it keeps the job moving and keeps your belongings out of the way.
Do you also cover Shiregreen, Longley, Fir Vale and Sheffield Lane Top?
Yes. We work throughout S5 and the surrounding north Sheffield areas, including Shiregreen, Longley, Parson Cross, Fir Vale, Page Hall, Wincobank, Shirecliffe and Sheffield Lane Top, plus the rest of the city. If you are nearby and not sure, just call us.
