Sheffield city centre is largely an apartment market. Most of it sits in the S1 postcode, with parts spilling into the neighbouring S2 and S3 districts, and much of the residential stock is either purpose-built apartment blocks or conversions — former mills, warehouses and office buildings turned into flats, particularly around the edges of the centre.

That changes what a plumber is dealing with. Instead of a house with its own boiler, drains and stopcock, a city centre call is usually a combi or electric system squeezed into a cupboard, pipework shared with the flats above and below, a communal riser you cannot isolate on your own, and a leak that has already announced itself on someone else's ceiling. Conversions add their own quirks, because services have often been threaded through a building that was never designed to carry them.
